How to learn English effectively – a very useful article from the Learn Hot English Magazine:
In future language learning will more and more take place in authentic environments and make use of authentic learning materials closely linked with students’ own interests, partly created by students themselves. Learning will focus on real life problems and real world phenomena and it’ll be inquiry-, project- or problem-based. Language learning will be one part of cross-curricular multi-disciplinary learning projects designed together with students and teachers.

How can parents and teachers best educate young children?

Gramma comes to pick up her grandchild from English class. She peeps in through the window and heads into the classroom saying: ”Oops, I’m late. They are only playing.”
English, is the most widespread language in the world, and so is a very powerful asset for anyone who speaks it, both socially and in business. Speaking English well makes any individual more employable and having English speaking employees is an advantage for any employer. Now, of course, it is increasingly useful on the internet where over half of all traffic is in English. “English opens doors” to more people as friends and for business.......
English developed in Britain and is the result of the fusion of many languages, due to invasions of Britain prior to 1066 AD by peoples speaking Celtic, German, Norwegian, French and international influences from all over the world since that time. That is why British English has so many interesting language rules!
Britain is a combination of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and the group of countries have several different names in the worlds of politics, sport and the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. We see the individual country names, the United Kingdom, Great Britain and Ireland, and the British Isles. What do these names mean?
The history of English is the history of the British Isles, during the first 1,000 years after Christ, Britain was invaded many times, by different peoples, who each added to the language, different words, grammar and pronunciations. In the second thousand years after Christ the English went around the world and created an empire and they imported many words into their language. So the language has evolved continuously and is still doing so.
The words of a language are like the bricks of a house. The more the bricks and the more secure they are, the more stable the house is. How can you learn words effectively?
Not in the classical way. Namely, you write the new word on the left side of your notebook, and then you write the meaning of the word on the right side. This is a bad method, because this way you learn the words in isolation, in real life they never occur this way.
Furthermore, this method is also of limited use because a word can have countless meanings depending on the context.
Finally because in this way you will associate the foreign word with the Hungarian word, not the meaning. The main aim should be that if the German word “das Wasser” (water) is uttered, in our minds the picture of the water should appear
When I was young, in Romania, English was the language of foreigners. When we heard English or read English it was not our language. The world has moved on. Nowadays it is the language of the global village.
Actually I have always loved English, and have always thought that it is a wonderful language...
I had always wanted to learn it...
and then something happened.
It was a Wednesday morning, I was in my office and the phone rang. Nobody else was there so I had to answer it. I picked up the phone and what followed was one of the worst, most embarrassing moments or rather eternities in my life. At the other end of the line there was one of our joint venture partners from an EU country. He greeted me in English and I hardly managed to say 'good morning” to him, followed by a “sorry, I don't speak English”, that was pretty much all I knew in English, or in a foreign language. He didn't know this, so he tried in French, German and Spanish but in vain.
English is a rich language and derives from many other languages as a result of its history. So there are many interesting perspectives on the language and the language is used all around the world.
In our English4Life blog we hope that our subscribers can inform, educate and entertain other subscribers with both insights into the origins and development of the language and thought provoking comments on world affairs.
